Take a deep long breath. You’re gonna need it to get through this blog!
So, I have been pretty busy lately. I feel like I have given so much of myself that I just don’t have any more to give, and that goes for just about every aspect of my life.
About a month ago, My instructors talked me into competing in an updo competition at a Hair show in Las Vegas. The rules were that you have one hour to do a hairstyle that a woman might wear on an evening out on the town. The hairstyle had to match the attire and makeup as well. The judging is based on the total look. So, I figured that would be easy enough and was chosen with one other girl from the Beauty College to represent the school.
I chose my sister, Emily as my model cause she has long hair and is thin and all that jazz. Emily lives in Vegas, so she drove down here so I could practice a few times. I thought her hair would be really easy to work on, but it turns out her hair is super thin and fine (like baby hair) and has a tendency to have a lot of static. So, I just figured we would put extensions in and all would be great.
So, we practiced and all was good. . .Until a week before the competition.
All of a sudden, the instructor over seeing the competition informed us that we have to cut the hair at the competition as well. I about flipped out. The hairstyle I had been practicing on for a month took me the whole hour to do. There was no way I was going to have enough time to cut her hair AND do the hairstyle I had been practicing. She also told us we couldn’t use extensions or any ornamentation too. This would have been very useful information BEFORE I had bought 25 dollars worth of pearl hairpins to stick in her hair!
So I had one week to come up with a completely different hairstyle and Emily lives 3 hours away. So, I figured I would just drive up there the Saturday before the Competition and practice on her head a little. So Joshua and I jumped in our car with all my beauty supplies and away we went. . . .until 33 miles outside of Baker. That was as far as my little car dared to go. My Acura Integra majorly overheated and we were stuck on the side of the road FOREVER!!!
We pulled over and waited for a while for the engine to cool down to see if that was the problem. Two minutes after we took off, It over heated again. We were stuck on a big hill, so we thought we would let the engine cool down again and see if we could make it over the hill. We made It over the hill, but the car over heated again and refused to cool down. Being the retard that I am, I had no water with me. So stupid. So we sat in the car for two hours while Joseph drove out to us to se if he could fix the car. Turns out there is a leak somewhere in the Radiator and we had to have the car towed all the way home. So, we never made it to Vegas. But I ended up with a broken car, a sunburned baby, and a very miserable time.
We made arrangements for Emily to come down that Thursday, which was her 19th birthday, so we could figure out what the heck we were going to do. We put highlights in her hair, which took FOREVER, and came up with a style that would be okay. I wasn’t really happy with the style, but we were running out of time and I needed a plan.
Oh. I almost forgot. I was planning on making the dress too. But when The rules got changed and my car had a temper tantrum, my awesome Mother decided I had a little too much stuff on my plate and offered to make the dress. I never would have been able to do it myself, and I was slowly loosing my sanity.
So After school on Friday, We packed up the car and headed to Vegas. The drive wasn’t bad, and I was starting to feel confident that I might be able to pull this shindig off.
Saturday morning rolls around, and Joshua decided that we were having fun yet. He decided that throwing up and having a 102 degree temperature would be a ball. We cancelled out trip to the temple that we were planning on tried to comfort our little man. I hate seeing him so sick. And this was the worst I have ever seen him. Perfect timing huh.
Around three o’clock, he seemed to be doing much better, so my sisters and I, along with Joshua, jumped in the car and went to Kohl’s because I was suppose to wear something “professional” to compete in, and living the life that I have, Professional is not in my vocabulary.
We weren’t there very long when Joshua realized we were shopping. He usually loves to shop to stare and laugh at all the crazy looking people, but I guess he decided that he was going to act like a boy that day. He was miserable. It was the biggest mistake to take him with us. I figured he would be happier with me than at my parents house., and Joseph looked like he could really use a nap. But after trying a few things on, and have him screaming his head off with strangers asking if he was okay, I decided enough was enough. We left with out buying anything and figured that I would just wear jeans and flip flops cause I just didn’t care.
But my Mom could tell I was about to loose it when we got back and weren’t caring any bags, so they calmed Joshua down and sent me out shopping again. **Sigh**
I got back super late cause I couldn’t figure out what size I was for the life of me. It has been a super long time size I have been out clothes shopping. . . .My Mom finished the dress around 1 or 2 in the morning and Joshua was still super sick. Joshua and I both got a blessing and I was feeling like the worst mom in the world.
Okay. Sunday morning. The day of the competition. Emily and I had to be at the Las Vegas Convention Center by 12pm to check in. We got there in plenty of time but then it took us nearly 30 minutes to find a parking space. After walking about a mile-in heels- we find my instructors and talk to a bunch of people and register. I was freaking out. I was not about to NOT be able to compete after all the crap that had happened with the competition all ready. But we made it and all was good.
So it turns out that we didn’t have to cut the hair after all. That was a big relief. But I couldn’t get Emily’s hair to do what I wanted it to and wasn’t satisfied with the out come. I knew I could have done better if I had a little more time.
The competition was tough. I am glad I wasn’t a judge. There were about 18 contestants and some really awesome hairstyles. I got a lot of compliments and quite a few strangers took photos of my work.
So after waiting two hours after the judging was over they announced the winners. Turns out first place was just a simple bun. So retarded. I totally don’t understand what was so awesome about it. There were even a few visible bobby pins sticking out. I’m not surprised I didn’t place. I knew it wasn’t my best. But I learned a lot and it’s something I can put on a future resume’. I’m just glad it’s over and I’ll never have to do one again.
After we got back to my parents house, we ate dinner and I cut Lacey and Kelsey’s hair. They had been wanting me to cut their hair the last 5 times I had been up there. Emily wanted her hair cut too, but being a mom at that point was more important. So, I guess she will have to wait till I’m up there again.
Joseph and I decide that Joshua would feel better at home so we packed up and headed back to Lucerne. After a few naps on the side of the road, we got back at 3 in the morning. I’m glad the whole ordeal is over. I’m ready to focus a little more on myself and my family. And the five blisters on my feet from this silly hair show need some major attention!!

Megan, I am so sorry you had to go through all that. It seems like when it rains it pours. You are a fabulous writer though. Em's hair looked AMAZING!!! I loved it. The dress was awesome too.
Wow, what a weekend! Emily looked fabulous...I can't believe how cool the 'weave' is on the top.Very pretty! (and btw, she sure grew up pretty too!)
I don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but I had a friend, just like you, thought the LV comp.would be a one time gig...until the powers that be saw what she pulled off during the competition. They urged her each time to go and compete, which of course she did (they were the ones grading her at school!). Long story short: she now is one of the top designer/stylists at Princess Bourgese and makes BANK! Hang in there, you never know.
Yes, GREAT job, LOVED the weave on top, I can't believe a BUN won...what is up with that.
Thanks for the comments guys!
The principal of the school was so enraged about the Bun taking first that she demanded that she see the score cards. Tuns out I was really super close to placing. First place had 142 points and I had 130. That made me feel a lot better!
